(K-2) Earth Science Lesson #2

  • Focus Question: What does our sense tell us about the weather?
  • Launch: Boys and girls I have a great book about what we talked about yesterday. Have the book and pick a picture of the wind blowing the leaves. Ask the students about what they see and how they know it is the wind.

-Make a graphic organizer (Ask the students to tell you what wind is and write their responses down on the graphic organizer.) : (Wind is....) -leaves blowing -when the air feels cold - when your hair moves - when kites fly...

  • Investigation: Boys and girls we are going to make a wind flag. Everyone is going to take a popsicle stick and grab a piece of felt shapes like a rectangle. Instruct the students hold the fabric to the strip as you staple them together. Ask the students what they think will happen if we hold our flags outside? Record what they say on the chart for their predictions. When the flags are ready ask the students to come outside and bring their flags with them. The students are going to discuss with their friends about what happened.
  • Data: Ask the students to draw a picture of what happened to their flag when we were outside. After the students draw their picture ask them to look at it. If your flag is not blowing in your picture write the #0 of the picture, if your flag was blowing a little bit write the #1, and if your flag was really blowing write the #2 on the picture. Make a chart recording the number the students wrote on their picture.
  • Extension/Closure: Boys and girls how did you know that your flag was blowing? What senses told us? We can tell the wind is blowing because it moved our flags. We learned that wind can be seen and heard. We learned that we can feel the wind.
