(K-2) Earth and Space Lesson #1

Big Idea: Weather and Seasonal Changes
Cross Curricular: Math/Language, Arts/Science

  • Focus Question: What does our Senses tell us about the weather?
  • Launch: Conduct a survey chart- What is your favorite weather? Ask the students and record their what they say on the chart. Count the items on the survey with the students. Ask the students which has the most and which has the least. - Have a discussion: What is weather? Make an anchor chart: What is the weather like today? Does weather mean the sky? How do we know it is going to be a nice day or a bad day? Ask the students to turn and talk to their partner about how we know what the weather is going to be.
  • Investigation: Introduce the senses to the students. (Listening for the wind, noticing if your skin feels hot or cold, seeing the clouds in the sky, and rain falling... exedra) Ask the students to observe all these things and encourage the students to use their senses. When the students come back in the room ask them to draw a picture of what they saw. Remember to tell them to include everything that they observed with their senses. (When the students are finished drawing the weather from their own observations ask them what the weather was like from their drwaings. Write down what they tell you on their data chart.
  • Extension: Help the students know what they have done with their drawings. For example, When a students says they saw dark clouds, write down "dark clouds" and ask the students what sense did they use (seeing).
  • Closure: Ask the students how we know, from the weather what to wear? Tell them to turn and talk to their partner about this question.
